Here are some simple tips making traveling with your pet a breeze. Invest in the right gear to make the trip easier on both of you. I've used three airline approved carriers since adopting Maverick 7 years ago however once I found the Argo brand by Teafco, I've given all the rest away. This carrier is by far my favorite and not just because it looks good. It has 3 large zipper compartments, super lightweight, lots of ventilation and easy to keep clean!
I got these awesome travel food bowls from The Container Store. They have rubber bottoms so they won't freak out Fido by moving across the floor unlike his 'at home' bowls, they have lids so I can keep one serving of food ready & be able to feed him immediately when we land. I always keep a collapsable bowl for water (I also keep one in the car for day trips), it also doubles as a measuring cup. I keep his food and snacks in these reusable bags which has a place for their name (comes in handy when boarding).
Right before arriving at the airport I remove his collar and lead to make the TSA line easier.
I don't allow him to drink or eat one hour before leaving for the airport but give him water when the beverage cart comes around once were in the air. You don't want them to have an upset tummy or feel pressure needing to relieve themselves during the flight. Most airports don't have Pet Relief Areas designated so if your pup isn't curb trained you'll want to stop at your first patch of grass after leaving the airport.
Always have a pack of wet wipes in case of any accidents and a snack pack to reward good behavior or to tie them over til they can eat.
I always have a copy of shots with me because you never know when you'll need it. Avoid keeping a blanket in the airline approved bag because remember you don't want them to get over heated especially when the plane ventilation doesn't always reach the floor.
I also give Maverick a good brushing the day we leave so if we're gone a week we don't have to worry about snarles. I also bathe him right before a trip and brush his teeth... Just because you like traveling with your pup doesn't mean the person seated next to you won't complain so give them one less reason to make a fuss And keep Fido fresh!
